I have seen the button shown on the help screen to combine units but never in the game. Is there a special combination of equipment/unit positioning required or has this feature been dropped in the newer version (i.e. I see that these "super" units are avail in cities). Apologies for the basic question.

The feature was a pain to use so it was dropped in place of the "super" units in the cities. People has to spend to much time routing units to get them combined.
Apparently I missed removing it from the help screens somewhere. Where did you see it so I can go clean that up?

If you click on an engineer and bring up the units menu then hit help it displays
-ungroup
-kick out stored units
-combine units
