Hi Guys. The new Pocket War is finally to the point where I am ready to start getting some feedback. It isn't playable yet, but the look and feel are good to go. So announcing the new Pocket War Online.
What I need for everyone to go to this url http://www.metalshard.com/online/mapview.html?mapid=99. It will ask you to log in. There is a link that says "bypass" at the bottom of the login screen, click on that. Then you should see the new map interface. Once you can see it play with it and post the results here.
Green cities and units are yours, red or gray are not. You should be able to click on a green city or unit. Then click again on it to display the menu. Highlighted menu choices should work. Also, every so often it should tell you that it is about to update then update (though the update won't do anything at this point because the processing script is not running.) Fog of war isn't operational yet. I'm only testing map, city and unit rendering, the menus, and alert processing.
After you have played with it post the following information to this thread...
What browser are you using (ex. firefox, opera, minimo, etc.)?
What connection you use (ex. wifi on iphone, dialup, dsl, etc.)?
What device are you using (ex. pc, WM5 phone, iphone, wii, etc.)?
Does it display at all?
Does it display correctly?
Does it display any error messages?
How long did it take to display?
If you are on a touch based device (like an iphone or windows mobile device) is the UI large enough to work without a stylus. Easy enough to scroll the map, popup menus, etc. I want you to be able to drive the entire UI with your fingers.
If at all possible post screen shots and any thing else you can think about. As always thanks for the help.
Also, if you want to take part in the beta I will be looking for active players with a variety of devices. When you post to this thread just make a note that you would be interested in the beta.

Nice. I looked at it with Firefox/Vista.
Is this going to be online only?
And yes, you know I'll beta it for you.

At first it will be online, browser only. Then I am going to build some custom clients. For example, IE on most windows mobile devices is so broken that it will never be able to render this. But I can build a client pretty easily for that platform that can.
The game will also email you or send you SMS alerts. This will let you know when things are happening even if you aren't logged in and only have a regular cell phone (no data plan, or bad browser.) You will be able ro reply to the messages with simple commands for your units, or execute scripts that you setup earlier. The game never stops even if you arent logged in. And there is always that player up at 2am trying to kill everyone off. :)
I have built the server side so I can create a light version of it that will let a single player play. Long term I plan on packaging that up and shipping it with the custom clients. Which will let me sell a single player version of the game. I'm not 100% sure on this yet, but I will probably give away the single player version, and then have some form of nag in it to get people to sign up for the online version.

I tell you, I play the current version on my PDA/phone nearly daily. It's one of the first things I install when redoing my rom or replacing phone. It works, and works pretty well. The only thing I don't like is the "5" codes then emailing you to reset them. (Which I'm probably going to have to email you for soon)
Also, my new ppc phone has opera browser. I'll have to give that a shot and see how it looks!

It's painfully slow in both IE 7 and FF3.0.5 on Windows Vista.

What speed computer do you have and what video card? It seems to run ok for me on FF3.0.5 Vista. IE is painfully slow no matter what. I've found the fastest browser to be Chrome so far. And the Wii is surprisingly fast as well.

Lenovo T61p laptop Intel Duo Core T7700 @ 2.4Ghz, 3GB Ram, Nvidia Quadro FX 570M vid card, 10M internet (work).
I'll try it from home when the kids settle in. I'll also try it on the Wii when we open it at Xmas. :-)
Come to think of it, I'd really like to play this multiplayer on the Wii....Do you need a sponsor for a dev kit?

It's all browser based so it works on the Wii, but you need the opera browser for the Wii. It used to be free, I think they charge like 500pts for the opera browser now. I wish it was easy to make a channel that pointed directly to a webapp.
What I need is someone to test it on the XBox now (and does the Playstation have a browser?)
