Game crashes in windows 7, any fixes or workarounds pending?

If I remember correctly the crash is caused by the user account control stuff, and you can get it to work on windows 7 by running the game as administrator (right click on the game and choose 'run as administrator' to start it.)

Tried that, and tried compatability settings, and it still fails. The game just drops out somewhere between 25 and 50 turns. It just stops and I get the generic MS error message. This is happening on my Windows 7 machine, Vista, and even my XP machine. I've treid using compatability settings and running as administrator.
I think I have it working on my vista using compatability settings for 95 on vista (150 turns without a crash) , but I can't get it to work on my son's windows 7 machine at all.

I think it's something in the 1.7 version, I tried going back to the 1.6 version, and it seems to be fine on my xp machine. I'll try the windows 7 machine tomorrow and see what happens.
EDIT: I can run the 1.6 version on vista and XP no problem
